CILIPS > Introduction

The Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals in Scotland (CILIPS) is the professional body for librarians and information managers and represents personal members from all sectors - public, school and academic libraries, and libraries from both the voluntary and commercial sectors.

CILIPS was formed in 2002 by the amalgamation of the Library Association and the Institute of Information Scientists.

CILIPS undertakes the representation of CILIP in the Scottish context and works on behalf of Scottish members to improve and support Scottish library and information services. CILIPS works closely with the Scottish Library and Information Council, the advisory body for Scottish ministers on library and information matters, sharing staffing and accommodation as well as co-operating on many joint projects.

Head of Community Services in Education and Lifelong Learning at Scottish Borders, Alan Hasson is CILIPS President for 2008. The Senior Vice President is Margaret Forrest, Learning Resources Manager at the Fife Campus of the University of Dundee. The Junior Vice President is Chris Pinder, Director of Learning Information Services at Napier University. Christopher Phillips is CILIPS Past President (2007).

Each year, CILIPS marks the significant contribution of a few individuals by presenting them with Honorary Membership of CILIPS. These are people who have worked hard for the organisation, sometimes in behind-the-scenes advocacy or putting in lengthy hours in a voluntary capacity to further the objectives of CILIPS and libraries.
