CILIPS is governed by a Council of 35 members meeting three times a year. Membership comprises elected members, Honorary Officers, representatives from the four Branches and representatives from all CILIP Groups active in Scotland.
There are three Committees of Council which meet on the same day as Council; Policy and Resource meet before Council, and Library and Information Services and Membership Services Committee meet after the Council. The Chair of Council, Honorary Treasurer and Honorary Publications Officers are elected by the Council annually. The Chair and Vice-Chair of each of the Standing Committees is elected annually by the Council members.
This Committee deals with all matters concerning library and information services in Scotland. Representatives from some CILIP's special interest groups, nationally elected councillors and representatives from Aslib, the Scottish Law Librarians and the Scottish Health Information Network (SHINE) (formerly the Association of Scottish Health Sciences Librarians) join to discuss matters of concern. This Committee has the responsibility of informing Council on all matters relating to school, college (further and higher education), and university libraries, public library authorities, commercial, industrial, professional organisation and other special libraries. This Committee is responsible for the promotion of standards of service in libraries.
This Committee provides or arranges for the provision of services for members of CILIPS, including professional and educational development. The Committee undertakes responsibility for the organisation of Conferences, seminars and exhibitions, oversees the publications programme and takes action designed to retain and increase the membership of CILIPS.
This Committee comprises of the Chairs and Vice-Chairs of the Standing Committees and the Honorary Officers. The remit of the Committee is to formulate and keep under review the general policy of CILIPS, to co-ordinate policy issues referred to it and arising from the work of the Standing Committees, to undertake responsibility for the financial management of CILIPS and to deal with internal issues of CILIPS including constitutional issues.
Members can indicate on which Committee they wish to serve. Representatives from Branches are appointed to Membership Services Committee. Honorary Officers are ex- officio members of all Committees.
There are four Branches at present. They are - Central, East, North and North East. The remit of each Branch is to contribute to the formulation of CILIPS policy, act as a link between Council and the membership, stimulate wider involvement of members and students in the work of CILIPS by organising professional and social events and disseminating information on Branch activities.
