The Wi-Fi installation is complete and working well in all 15 sites which is the whole of the public library buildings establishment. Laptops have been provided to increase access to connectivity by the public. There was some slippage in the project caused by sickness amongst Stirling Council technical services staff.
Unfortunately the implementation of 4 broadband lines, included in Wireless Stirling, is not likely to be completed in the timescale of the project. Stirling Council has committed to completing implementation within the financial year 2007-08 and has been given permission to vire the funding to extend the RFID element of the project. This has the potential to allow greater choice to users of the housebound service.
The RFID element, which allows radio-frequency tagging of stock is on schedule and running in one branch. Results so far indicate that one hour of staff time per day is being released. The time is released because staff do not have to unpack boxes (for example project kits for schools and bulk loans to sheltered housing) and individual items (such a spoken-word multiple-CD packs) for time-consuming checking and the scanners provide accurate print-outs of return stock.
