A service of SLAINTE: Information and Libraries Scotland

LocScot > Scottish Local History Week

Local History Week is a national event in Scotland aimed at raising the profile of local history and showcasing our collections. Each year local studies librarians across the country work with colleagues and community groups in their own area on a wide range of projects.

Each year we work to a theme, one sufficiently broad to allow libraries in all parts of the nation to join in.

Scottish Local History Week 19 – 26 Apr 2008

The theme for 2008 to coincide with the 500th anniversary of printing in Scotland is “Newspapers and Printing”. In advance of this topic, our dayschool in Oct 2007 “Hot Metal and Cold Print: a celebration of 500 years of Printing in Scotland” gave us a preview of some of the initiatives marking this years celebrations.

There is a varied programme of events throughout Scotland. A poster is available for your use in publicising the week.

The theme for 2009 will be "Homecoming", with its aim to motivate Scots, people of Scottish descent and those who simply love Scotland to come to Scotland in 2009 and experience its great heritage, culture and contributions to the world. In anticipation of this, we have a dayschool on Wed 16 Apr 2008 "My Ain Folk. Homecoming 2009", to be held at the A K Bell Library in Perth.

The National Library of Scotland and their partners, Scottish Printing Archival Trust, with support from the National Archives of Scotland have a number of different exhibitions and events planned whilst the Sapphire Project (Scottish Archive of Print and Publishing History Records) has been recording the oral history of workers in the publishing and printing industry.

Download the LocScot ideas sheet for inspiration on how to involve your organisation in events and activities.
