Technical demonstrators in Europe

The following demonstrators use DDC as an active component:

HILT II pilot terminologies server (currently offline)

The application aims to identify services and collections offered by the UK's Joint Information Steering Committee (JISC) which are likely to have resources relevant to a subject query.

The demonstrator service:

  1. Accepts a subject term input by the user.
  2. Returns all sets of DDC caption hierarchies which contain a match for the term found in the DDC schedules, DDC relative index, and LCSH and other topics mapped to DDC numbers.
  3. The user selects one of the hierarchies; that is, disambiguates the input term.
  4. The server displays metadata for collections which are likely to contain items in the specific or broader subject area; the collections are classified by DDC and broader numbers are identified by automatic truncation. The metadata displayed includes the subject scheme used in the item-level finding-aid associated with the collection, the topic or classification number in that scheme which is the nearest equivalent to the user's term, and link to the online finding-aid if available.
HILT project phase III SOAP client demonstrator

The application demonstrates the use of basic use functions identified in phase III of the HILT project and instantiated using Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP).

Technical demonstrators outside of Europe

The following demonstrators use DDC as an active component:

Dewey Cloud (University of Adelaide)

Demonstrates the visual presentation of collection subjects using a tag cloud of DDC captions in English linked to the catalogue of the The University of Adelaide Library.

Experimental classification service

Provides DDC numbers for items based on FRBR work sets derived from a subset of the WorldCat database. Items can be identified by ISBN or OCLC number.

OCLC DeweyBrowser (beta v.1.0) (DDC Abridged Edition 14)

Demonstrates the use of the DDC summaries to provide a 3 level hierarchical browse by DDC classes with English, French, German, Spanish or Swedish captions linked to the DDC Abridged Edition 14 captions.

OCLC DeweyBrowser (beta v.1.0) (Ebooks)

Demonstrates the use of the DDC summaries to provide a 3 level hierarchical browse by DDC classes with English, French, German, Spanish or Swedish captions linked to the OCLC Electronic books collection.

OCLC DeweyBrowser (beta v.1.0) (WorldCat)

Demonstrates the use of the DDC summaries to provide a 3 level hierarchical browse by DDC classes with English, French, German, Spanish or Swedish captions linked to the WorldCat Collection (a set of over 2 million WorldCat records most widely held by member libraries). Colour is used to visually represent the relative number of records matching each class, division and section.

OCLC DeweyBrowser beta v2.0

Demonstrates the use of the DDC summaries to provide a 3 level hierarchical browse and search by DDC classes with English, French, German, Norwegian, Spanish or Swedish captions linked to the WorldCat Collection (a set of over 2 million WorldCat records most widely held by member libraries). Font-size is used to represent the relative number of records matching each class, division and section, and captions are displayed as a tag cloud.

OCLC DeweyBrowser Tagcloud (Ebooks)

Demonstrates the visual presentation of collection subjects using separate tag clouds of the top 100 classes of DDC numbers and captions in English linked to records for the the OCLC Electronic books collection. Font-size is used to represent the relative number of records matching each class, division and section.

OCLC DeweyBrowser Tagcloud (WorldCat)

Demonstrates the visual presentation of collection subjects using separate tag clouds of the top 100 classes of DDC numbers and captions in English, French, German, Spanish, Swedish, or Vietnamese linked to the WorldCat Collection (a set of over 2 million WorldCat records most widely held by member libraries). Font-size is used to represent the relative number of records matching each class, division and section.
