
Edinburgh libraries will again be showcasing their services for young people at the Edinburgh International Book Festival. This year a Team Read promotion will be held in the children's book shop with craft activities and an appearance from Doctor Recommenda Book, who will be offering reading advice and issuing reading prescriptions. The Doctor will also be on hand at the Schools Gala Day on 26 Aug. An author outreach programme has been arranged to bring the best of the Festival to school groups within community libraries. Edinburgh's Bookstart team will also run extra Rhymetime sessions at the Festival. Added: 19 Aug
CILIP in Scotland (CILIPS) is holding a Centenary Dinner on Fri 24 Oct. The event will be held at the Radisson SAS Hotel in Edinburgh and all CILIPS members are invited to attend. The cost will be £45 per person and numbers are limited so early booking is advisable. More details can be found on SLAINTE events and bookings can be made online. The Scottish Library Association (SLA), the predecessor of CILIPS, was formed in Edinburgh in October 1908. To mark the Centenary, CILIPS has digitised images from the SLA News archive. To celebrate the 90th birthday of Nelson Mandela on Fri 18 Jul, East Dunbartonshire Libraries ran a promotion of South African Fiction and African Women's Fiction. The promotion featured 49 titles, offering a broad selection of African and South African authors. The list included well-known titles, such as Prester John by John Buchan and The Story of an African Farm by Olive Shreiner, as well as popular modern authors Gillian Slovo and Barbara Trapido The most popular titles at the end of the promotion were Deon Meyer's Dead at daybreak and Ahdaf Soueif's The Map of Love which respectively accounted for 15% and 13% of total issues. Two Scottish councils have announced urban regeneration projects which will place libraries at the centre of the communities. In Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire the library will be part of a new health centre on Main Street, which will also include a registrar's office and Council First Stop Shop. The second building project will take place in Craigmillar, Edinburgh where a library, high school, supermarket and town square will be built over a 50-acre site. To kick-start the Edinburgh Festival of Libraries, a Libraries Fair will take place on Sat 8 Nov. The Fair is intended to showcase event to raise the profile of library and information services in Edinburgh. Last year 40 services participated in the event, attracting 700 visitors throughout the day. Exhibitors are invited to book slots before Mon 18 Aug using the registration form. The Scottish Funding Council (SFC) has pledged £3 million to the proposed East Renfrewshire College, which will be formed by Reid Kerr, Cardonald, and Langside Colleges. The College is set to be built by East Renfrewshire Council at a location in Barrhead as a key part of regeneration in the area. West Lothian Council has been awarded GBP 10,000 to continue the Their Past, Your Future project based on personal experiences of the Second World War. The second phase of the initiative, titled West Lothian and the Forgotten War, will focus on creating an oral history of the war. The end product of the project will be a documentary film and a booklet. The project will be led by the museum service. The lottery funding was allocated by Museums Galleries Scotland (MGS) from a total award of GBP 590,000 to develop Their Past, Your Future across Scotland. A JISC Collections initiative to provide Further Education colleges in England with access to a core collection of e- books has been extended to cover Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. In response to this development, JISC Collections has launched an online survey to identify e-books of specific relevance to the Scottish curriculum. Stockbridge Library in Edinburgh has recently re-opened following a major refurbishment programme. The GBP 400,000 makeover includes a learning centre with new computers, an improved community room and a gallery with coffee shop. A self-service system has also been installed. Added: 5 Aug
The Scottish Information literacy Project has received an award of GBP 41,598 from the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. The money will be used to restructure the recently piloted National Information Literacy Framework (Scotland), including the development of good practice exemplars. According to the Information World Review (IWR) Google is now inviting users to participate Knol, an online encyclopedia similar to Wikipedia. Unlike Wikipedia, however, Knol will display author's names and will feature multiple articles on the same topic. Knol has been in closed beta since it was announced in December 2007. Added: 1 Aug
