Dunfermline Carnegie Library's 125th anniversary

Dunfermline library image

Exactly 125 years since it first opened its doors to the people of Dunfermline, an informal birthday celebration took place at Carnegie Library. As befitted the founder’s birthplace, Dunfermline’s was the very first of 2,509 libraries funded by Andrew Carnegie in the English speaking world. A programme of events to celebrate the anniversary will culminate with a reception at the end of Oct. Anniversary displays will be on view until then, including a selection of greetings received from other Carnegie Libraries in the UK and abroad. In recognition of Carnegie's contribution to libraries in Scotland, SLIC has created a Carnegie Libraries of Scotland group on photo sharing website, Flickr. All Scottish libraries funded or part-funded by Carnegie are eligible for inclusion. Added: 17 Sep

Books still top for teens

Books

Book borrowing is the main reason for public library visits by young people according to a survey commissioned by the Scottish Government. Scotland’s Schools Omnibus, an annual survey of secondary school pupils carried out by Ipsos MORI, found that 67% of young people visited their local library to borrow, return or renew books. This is significantly higher than the numbers using computers and the Internet (37%) or borrowing multimedia materials (10%). A substantial number (16%) of the 11-15 year-olds surveyed also selected browsing or reading as the motivation for their library visits. View news release. Added: 17 Sep

Government forms data privacy group

The Scottish Government has formed a privacy and security scrutiny group to review local government’s handling of personal data. The group will cover all council services that use IT to process personal details, including information stored on library management systems. A set of guiding principles will be developed to improve privacy protection within Scottish public bodies. These measures aim to restore public confidence following a series of high profile breaches over the past year. The scrutiny group will be composed of privacy experts from the public and private sectors. Added: 11 Sep
