National Bookstart Day celebrations in Dundee

Dundee Bookstart event image

Dundee recently celebrated National Bookstart Day by holding free pirate themed Bookstart Rhymetimes at Discovery Point. Dundee was chosen to host one of Bookstart Scotland’s flagship events. There were three sessions of pirate rhymes and stories, where children were invited to come dressed as a pirate with the best dressed winning a prize. The young pirates were treated to entertainment from a pirate balloon modeller and were given a goodie bag to take away, which included a free copy of Pirates Ahoy by Debbie Harter and Oscar Seaworthy. There was also a special appearance from Hamish the Bookstart Bear. Jill Reid, Dundee City Council's Bookstart Co-ordinator said: "The event was a great success with nearly 200 parents and children attending. National Bookstart Day is about encouraging every family to make book sharing a regular part of their daily routine." Added: 20 Oct

Information Scotland survey launched

A display of Information Scotland journals

CILIP in Scotland (CILIPS) has launched a consultation over the future development of the Information Scotland journal. An online readership survey will be running from Fri 10 Oct until Fri 21 Nov to support this process. The survey will assist CILIPS in reviewing Information Scotland and its role in the organisation’s overall communication strategy. All Information Scotland readers are invited to participate in order to help make the publication more responsive to the needs of today's information professionals. The survey results will be reviewed by CILPS Membership Services Committee before being published in the journal and online. CILIPS Director, Elaine Fulton, said: "The membership survey last year indicated that members valued the journal as a service. A more detailed review of it is one strand of the business planning we are currently undertaking. We need to make sure we can provide the best possible services to members in times of significant financial pressures."Added: 10 Oct

View our updates or sign up to follow our tweets, which will cover topics such as CPD opportunities, new reports and publications, working party activity and details of ongoing SLIC and CILIPS projects. All information posted on Twitter will be distributed by alternative methods for those members who do not use or cannot access this service. Added: 10 Oct

Glasgow University image

The University of Glasgow has announced a new Publications Policy which will require authors to deposit the full text of peer reviewed journal articles and conference proceedings in the University's institutional repository, Enlighten. The University has been involved in repository developments since 2002 when the JISC funded DAEDALUS Project was founded. Professor Steven Beaumont, Vice-Principal Research and Enterprise, said: "The University of Glasgow generates over 3,000 research papers per year. Since we began to put these into Enlighten on a voluntary basis there have been over 1 million downloads. Enlighten really does help the University to showcase its research and to increase the impact of that it has on society. This new policy will make that impact even greater." The policy came into effect at the beginning of the 2008/2009 academic year and deposit is subject to publisher agreements. Photo by Graeme Bird. Added: 9 Oct

Linda Fabiani image

SLIC has published an impact study based on the first round of public library projects to receive awards from the Public Library Quality Improvement Fund (PLQIF). PLQIF was introduced by the Scottish Executive in 2006/07 to support the implementation of the Public Library Quality Improvement Matrix (PLQIM), which was developed by SLIC. Linda Fabiani, Minister for Europe, External Affairs and Culture, has welcomed the impact study: “I am glad to see that many local authorities have been engaging with the public libraries agenda and bringing forward new ideas about how to re-invigorate and modernise the service. Scottish Library and Information Council is a strong supporter of this activity with financial help from the Scottish Government. I welcome this report which highlights the impact of innovative projects and shows the value of local libraries in promoting employment skills, computer skills and promoting reading to provide a lifetime of benefit to people in Scotland.” PLQIF continues to be supported by the Scottish Government and SLIC has recently assessed a new batch of funding applications. Added: 1 Oct A shorter Executive Summary has also been published to highlight the study's main findings.
