The Scottish Health Information Network (SHINE) aims to ensure the best possible access to the knowledge base of health care. SHINE (originally ASHSL, the Association of Scottish Health Sciences Librarians) originated in the mid-1960's when the first qualified health librarian was appointed in Scotland. Today, SHINE supports activities and developments in health-related library and information services throughout Scotland. The SHINE union list of periodicals was created in 1983, and the current version includes the holdings of 91 libraries, with over 4500 different titles listed.
