Orkney Library and Archive are currently using the following Web2.0 tools:
We asked the staff at Orkney libraries to tell us a little about their decision to start using Twitter to promote their service.
We are always looking for new ways of promoting our services and events to our users, and those who do not regularly visit the library, twitter seemed an ideal way to do this.
Using twitter has definitely raised our profile in the community, and we are followed by several people who have not been regular service users, so we are reaching people we would not have before. Twitpic is also good for showing people just what goes on in the library and the special events we have. Twitter is a useful tool for making contact with authors and publishers and keeping up to date with the world of books and publishing.
Trying to tweet something on a regular basis can be difficult, sometimes there isn't much to say, but it is surprising how you can link things in the news locally or nationally to the library service.
A Library and Archive facebook page is being considered. We also recently began an Archive blog.
Have fun with twitter, a bit of humour always goes down well. You may not always have an event or something major to promote but even if you just put some new books on the shelf you can tweet about that. Regular updates help keep your service in people's minds.
Nothing that will be too controversial with the council bosses, but other than that anything goes. We try to keep the tweets library related, no matter how tenuously, but a few random tweets do no harm.
