NOF ICT Training: Outcomes

Acceptable Use Policy and Procedures

An Acceptable Use Policy is required to manage access to ICT equipment and Internet access in public libraries. Each authority will have an individual AUP policy reflecting the local circumstances.

More detailed information on developing an AUP policy is available.

This information is also available to download (PDF format).

Filtering and Acceptable Use Policies day: Oct 2002

Presentations were delivered by senior librarians from a number of authorities outlining their experience of filtering and Acceptable Use Policy when delivering ICT services to the public. Each authority is responsible for reviewing their policies and procedures to ensure they are adequate. It is vital there are support mechanisms in place to support staff so they are confident when dealing with these situations. Delegates were asked to examine 10 different situations (PDF format) which could occur in libraries and consider how a poor Acceptable Use Policy or a more comprehensive policy dealt with them. From this, each group was asked to produce a checklist of areas which a comprehensive AUP should cover.

A revised version of the checklist for Acceptable Use Policy for ICT and Internet use in public libraries has been produced.

Resource has produced an AUP kit (PDF format) and AUP example (PDF format) for using the kit in libraries. Advice on safe surfing is available from Susi.

User Manual Toolkit

The User Manual Toolkit (PDF format) aims to provide a framework for library authorities to adapt to their specific policies and procedures. The toolkit can assist you with the production of a manual that will provide customers with basic information on ICT use and help with basic tasks. To make use of the toolkit you are advised to read through each section and check that the details apply within your authority and make the necessary changes. Text written in italics outlines areas which require to be developed to provide specific detail.

Scottish Library and Information Council acknowledge the help and assistance of East Ayrshire Council, Highland Council, West Lothian Council, Stirling Council and Fife Council in producing this document.

Staff Manual Checklist

This Checklist (PDF format) covers the areas which should be included in a staff manual to ensure that frontline library staff have a useful support mechanism.
