The Curriculum for Excellence grew out of a review of the curriculum in 2004 and forms a central part of the Scottish Government’s Ambitious, Excellent Schools agenda. Work is currently underway on rolling out the new curriculum across Scotland.
The Scottish Library and Information Council (SLIC) has met with the Curriculum Review Team to ensure that the role of libraries (PDF) is represented within the new framework. The Improving Libraries for Learners (link) working group summarise this in the separate document, Library Support for Curriculum for Excellence.
Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Secretary for Lifelong Learning, recognised the role of school librarians at the Scottish Learning Festival in September 2009, in particular their contribution to the development of information literacy. The recently published Curriculum for Excellence - Building the Curriculum 4: Skills for learning, skills for life, and skills for work, also acknowledges this.
The Curriculum for Excellence learning outcomes have also been analysed and mapped to the Information Literacy Framework. To find out more, see the Analysis of Learning Outcomes.
