Effective libraries and learning resource centres are central to the learning and teaching taking place in the school. Beginning with the development of literacy and numeracy, libraries help to build confidence, skills and a lifelong love of reading. In the school library resource centre, children and young people have the opportunity to exercise their entitlement to access information and to develop literacy and a range of thinking skills in a supportive environment. School libraries promote the development of independent learning skills, supporting lifelong learning and encouraging children and young people to grow as responsible citizens and make an effective contribution to society.
During the development of Improving Libraries for Learners, the following examples of effective practice were identified. These clearly demonstrate the inspirational work of school librarians in supporting Curriculum for Excellence.
