The school librarian volunteered to take the lead in organising the debating society, a long-running, extra-curricular activity which is open to all age groups and abilities. Current members come from all year groups and have a mix of social and cultural backgrounds. Pupils must research topics for a debate and this is a fun and practical way to develop skills in analysing information.
Pupils construct their own arguments and write their own speeches; this experience contributes directly to their academic attainment, particularly in English, Politics and Modern Studies. Pupils also develop confidence and are empowered with an equal opportunity to voice their opinions and be heard. Quite often, pupils must argue a point they disagree with and this is valuable in developing an open-minded and inclusive attitude towards diverse viewpoints.
