Working with the Support for Learning department, the library responded to a need for resources to support the new S3 literacy programme for less-able or reluctant readers. Infozone/Quick Reads 4 U, a library reading corner, removes stigma attached to reading ‘different’ books and makes it attractive to pupils. The area is bright and welcoming and is stocked with a variety of reading formats such as graphic novels; film and tv tie-ins; and specialist publications, as well as non fiction and faction to give a balance of stories and facts.
Pupils visit Infozone fortnightly to encourage reading and regular borrowing of books. The programme focuses closely on supporting and selecting appropriate books for each pupil. Pupils have the opportunity to discuss individual reading and to establish reading preferences. An information skills/literacy programme helped pupils with research and ICT. The Infozone reading corner has had a positive effect on pupils’ reading and enjoyment of books and has already generated interest among pupils in other year groups and will be extended to S4.
